Joel was a member of the movement in Újpest from the 1940’s. He learned tanning and stayed at a “Dror Habonim” hahshara. He gave assistance to refugees, members of the movement, who arrived in Budapest. After the Germans invaded Hungary, Joel was enlisted in a forced labor unit and sent to occupied Yugoslavia. After the liberation he made aliya, joined a garin and took part in the establishment of Ein Zetim. During the War of Independence Joel fought in the Ramat-Yohanan and Haifa battles. He fell in the battle for the Latrun police station. He is buried in the Har HaMenuhot cemetery in Jerusalem.
